U.S. CENSUS BUREAU

Dwellr

A mobile & tablet app that finds the top 25 places that best fit your lifestyle.

CHALLENGE

The challenge was enable the American people and an increasingly mobile workforce to access high-quality digital government information and services anywhere, anytime, on any device.

SUMMARY

Almost everyone knows what the U.S. Census Bureau does every 10 years. But not everyone realizes that this data is used every day to help businesses, governments, and individuals make important decisions, and that it’s available for public use.

I designed a mobile and tablet experience that offers suggestions for travel destinations, relocation options and more based on the lifestyle preferences indicated in a user’s profile. Users can also learn more about their current locations and share their suggested locations on social media.

My overall goal was to raise awareness about the value of the data collected, increase transparency, and make the information more accessible to the general public. From a user perspective, whether you prefer the bright lights of the big city or wide open spaces, your phone is powered with neighborhood-level statistics on topics such as home values, education, and how people get to work so that you can explore where you want to dwell.

Through a series of questions, dwellr creates a profile to determine each user’s ideal location preferences. From American Community Survey statistics, that app matches over 200 data variables with thousands of places across the nation to create a list of the top 25 locations matching the user’s preferences. The user can view how well their preferences match to the locations along with statistics for them.

THINK OF DWELLR AS THE MATCH.COM FOR PEOPLE WISHING TO RELOCATE

The customizable demographic and community variables include:

  • City Size
  • Commute Type
  • Housing Value
  • Income
  • Occupations
  • Educational Attainment
  • Demographic Variables Including Age, Race, Marital Status and Family Type

The dwellr app is just one example of how the Census Bureau is following the Digital Government Strategy by making its statistics more available anywhere, anytime and in any place. In its first year, dwellr was downloaded 31,000+ times.
